  BIOFUEL
Biofuel refers to a non-petroleum-based fuel made from biological sources, which
can be used (as a blend to Petro diesel) in
unmodified
diesel-engine
vehicles. It is a renewable form of energy. Local production of the biofuel
will increase fuel security in Malawi and reduce dependency on imported fuel.
Currently Malawi Bureau of Standards is conducting performance tests with various
percentages of jatropha - diesel blend.
OTHER PRODUCTS FROM JATROPHA
The press cake from Jatropah is about 65% of volume of Jatropha seeds bought.
Research has been done by BERL on the use of press cake as Organic Fertiliser. The
results have been very encouraging.
Lighting
– The Jatropha oil is blended with paraffin and can be used in any standard
lamp. Test on a blending ratio of up to 20% have been succesfully conducted.
Organic fertiliser
– The press cake after expelling will be added with other organic material
to form BERL's Organic Fertiliser. This Organic Fertiliser has been succesfully used
for maize production and flue curred tobacco. BERL will continue to do further
research in Malawi in order to register this type of fertiliser.
The Result:
The sale of both products will result in precious Foreign Currency savings for
Malawi. At the
same time it generates an income to smallholder farmers and generates employment.
