No competition with food

  • To sustainably promote production of bio-energy, BERL has put in place mechanisms to make sure that the growing of bio-energy crops will not compete with labour, land and food security. All the areas where Jatropha is being grown under its contract farming system will be mapped. UN WFP will conduct baseline surveys and monitor the social and economic impact of bio-energy in all the areas that BERL will operate. BERL follows very strict land selection criteria to ensure that Jatropha is grown as a hedgerow or boundary around a field. Competition for labour is minimal, i.e. work can be done in between other labour requirements (see crop calendar below). BERL will ensure that the production of bio-energy has minimal impacts on the biodiversity by minimising the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides, land clearing and monocultures.
